Single Review: I Won’t Be Fooled Again by Golden Teardrops (2020) (Boring Spaghetti Records)

Husband and wife act, Lei and Ryan Marquez (Golden Teardrops) welcome us into 2020 with a single that reminds us just how invigorating any of Ryan’s work tends to be (Sodajerk, Apple Orchard, The Umbrella Puzzles).

Within the first 15 seconds, I Won’t be Fooled Again, courses through Northern Soul  style thumped out organs (an instrument that provides the tracks dominant hook and simply demands a talc covered dance floor!), fluttering jangled riffs and the wispish sweet vocals of any number of Sarah Records bands, whilst never being far away from the dry twang of The Umbrella Puzzles guitars.

It is a track where everything is thrown into the mix. This can often be a dangerous ploy, but in this case the juxtaposition of such seemingly disparate opposites and distant production are typically Marquez…typically brilliant.

A wonderful start to 2020!
