Single Review – Gutters of Love by Quivers (Ba Da Bing Records, Bobo Integral and Spunk Records)

May be an image of 4 people, people standing, tree and outdoors

Some moons ago Janglepophub’s little (but massive hearted !!!) Subjangle label contacted ‘Quivers towers’, after hearing their debut, You’re Not Always On My Mind single, enquiring whether there was any possibility that we may be able to collaborate with them on a future release.
They did not respond and after 24 long hard months of counselling we have moved on. So have they (and then some!) with proper gravitas ‘vinyl labels’ like Bob Integral, Ba Da Bing Records and Spunk Records all joining forces to ensure that their second album, Golden Doubt, is able to be despatched to as many parts of the world as possible, when released on 25.06.21 (grab a copy here).
Second flyer single, Gutters of Love, once again accentuates just why they are so deserving of such attention, as it underlines the specific layers of quality that are always so omnipresent in their aesthetic.
Initially they are cunning lyricists. Perhaps perfectly snidey, always original, they excel in the art of dual meanings. Here the highs and lows (or more specifically the ‘ups and downs’) of (perhaps) ingested serotonin, cavort allegorically, alongside the similarities of the emotions enjoyed/suffered, when falling in and generally losing, love.
Such lyrics are a tad disguised by the gorgeous harmonies and the general indie rock climate that is always infused with jangled intent. Here they take a detour towards the left field as an obtuse jangled riff enters mid-track and tumbles around with high-pitched keys that scream of 90s Madchester. It all eventually surfaces as the most melodically battered ramshackle imaginable, as the track teeters towards jangle rock, but is ultimately just too refinded to really ‘go there’.
You may need to whisper it quietly in the pubs, clubs and gigs of a Melbourne scene where dolewave jangle pervades every pore…but this band are the finest the city has to offer at present and this single does nothing to detract from that fact. I might just e-mail them again one day to see if they are at a very unlikely loose end !
