EP Review – Hurry Up and Wait by The Lunar Towers (2022) (Colorama Records)
London/Cheltenham threesome The Lunar Towers have released three digital singles on the Colorama Records label since April 2022, all of which are as jangly as keys dropped in an upturned bell.
Thankfully, this four-track Hurry Up and Wait EP not only continues such a trend, but the longer format also enables them to drift their lucid riffs through a more eclectic range of jangle-pop sounds.
At its most pervasive, the release is bookended by the absolute brilliance of Plastic Glass Towers and Back to You. All late-eighties anglophile jangled riff lucidity, such beauty is carried by a vocal delivery that is a mixture of a twisted Richard Hawley baritone and Steve Harley’s rounded intonations, both tracks hit the listener from all angles.
The other two tracks are equally as “jangly sweet”. The Shop Window style juxtaposition of laconic mid 90s guitar-pop and muscular brit-pop edged jangle-pop drives through Pillar to Post, whereas the energy reclines into a more melodic, languid Dropkickstyle, 90s melodic power-pop on Southern Love.
Rumour has it that a full-length album will be released in the not-too-distant future, allowing their talent to breathe in new directions. Press every follow button you can find to ensure you do not miss it when it surfaces.
