Sonny & The Sunsets

Track: Pink Cake  From: Self Awareness Through Macrame (album) Label: Rocks in Your Head Records Out: Album out 01 September 2023
Another gem from the upcoming Sonny & The Sunsets surfaces today. “Pink Cake” is a light and lofty jangler. Smith continues to dig into a sound that’s timeless and true — a feeling of nostalgia washed clean in the morning rain. The song strums into view on a loose acoustic cascade before Sonny sinks into a slightly askew delivery, leaning into bright, wobbly harmonies that fit cozy like a favorite sweater…read the full review at Raven Sings The Blues here.

Smug Brothers

Track: Let Me Know When It’s Yes  From: In The Book of Bad Ideas (album) Label: Anyway Records Out: Album out 08 September 2023
Lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Kyle Melton expressed his thoughts on the song, stating, “Almost as soon as we’d recorded it, we all kinda knew this was the “hit” from the album. Lots of jangly guitars with a few surprises in the arrangement, which was a lot of fun to put together.
For me, it’s about as straightforward a pop song as I would write; both musically and lyrically, it’s pretty relatable. Sometimes you have to be patient until someone or something gives you the green light and the moment is right.”…Read full review at The Fire Note here.

Curves

Track: Laundry  From: Laundry (album) Label: Instant Records Out: Album out 01 September 2023
Curves is a scruffy three-piece band from Vancouver, Canada. They enjoy making a wide variety of songs, from short poppy bangers to slightly longer catchy slappers. Curves is Jet Simon, Luis Gonzalez, and Sarah Richards.
After knowing each other for years, they realized that they all know how to play music so they should probably do something about that. With a series of EPs the past few years, you can always be sure there is something curvy in the works. Hell, maybe they’ll even make an album if they can muster the patience…from promo submission

Romanie’s power lies in her storytelling – her ability to see the world beyond the noise and channel her introspections into piercingly relatable yet beautiful songs. Her latest single ‘Are We There Yet?’ taps into the nuanced feeling of being never enough, of always striving for the next thing. With this she primes the landscape for her debut album, a body of work exploring the intricacies and intensity of time itself.
Speaking about the new single, Romanie explained, “The idea for the song came from a prominent feeling in my life where I always feel like I’m looking towards the next goal, dreaming about the next thing. Always running out of time and feeling like seconds are slipping through my fingers. Especially throughout lockdown, I felt like I was aging but nothing else was happening and I got so frustrated by what felt like missed opportunities.”…read full review at Broken 8 Records here.

Your Heart Breaks

Track: Do you dare to dream with me? (feat. Wynne Greenwood) From: The Wrack Line (album) Label: Kill Rock Stars Out: Now
Clyde Petersen shares his thoughts:
“I love how, despite the heavy feelings that accompanied much of the writing of the album, the end result came out bright and upbeat for the most part. I think this is due to the wonderful talents of local musicians Eli Moore and Ashley Eriksson from LAKE on guitar and bass and Katherine Paul from Black Belt Eagle Scout on the drums.
Filtered through their hands, these songs took on new life, and I am so happy to have so many dear friends voices singing on these tracks. For me the album is a place to visit life-long friends, to think back on our punk DIY lives of the late ’90s and early 2000s and to reflect on all of our mistakes and growth along the way.”…read full review from New Noise Magazine here.

Far Caspian

Track: Pool  From: The Last Remaining Light (album) Label: Tiny Library Records Out: Now
While much of The Last Remaining Light carries Far Caspian’s previous sound of lush, subtle bedroom lulls, there are moments where Johnston branches out toward a cohesive rock tone, like on “Pool.”
Here he maintains a heavier guitar tone, almost acting as the centerpiece over Johnston’s quiet vocals…see full review at Treblezine here.

Oslo Twins

Track: Back to Nothing  From: Back To Nothing EP (album) Label: Fascination Street Records Out: Now
With all the tracks produced by Ali Chant (Yard Act, Aldous Harding, Katy J Pearson), each release only seems to get catchier. “Back to Nothing”, however, is simple in the best way.
Oslo Twins manage to strike a clever balance between laid-back and upbeat. A steady chugging rhythm and aptly melodic basslines are married with ethereal synths to create an early 2010s folk-pop sound. It doesn’t try to stretch musical boundaries, but it certainly pleases the ears…read full review at The Line Of Best Fit here.

Coyle Girelli

Track: Museum Day  From: Museum Day (single) Label: Self released Out: Now
Coasting along on a bright dappled instrumental sound, Girelli’s crooner vocals are cool and expressive with the kind of sonorous timbre that recalls Matt Berninger from The National, but with added verve and expression. Girelli’s continued strength is his inherent pop sensibilities that are cloaked in a sense of deep yearning and romanticism, and ‘Museum Day’ is no exception: an incandescent ray of filtered joy, tempered with a guilding of melancholy, eloquently expressing desire and love…read full review at Backseat Mafia here.

Pony Girl

Track: I Believe in Nothing  From: Laff It Off (album) Label: Paper Bag Records Out: Album out 01 September 2023
Back it June we shared the title track from Laff It Off, the forthcoming album from Ottawa-Hull’s Pony Girl on Paper Bag Records. The record has been described as a sister record of previous release Enny One Will Love You, and the first single was itself a twin of past song, ‘Running in Circles‘.
Where the latter offered simmering anger in the face of another mundane day in work, ‘Laff It Off’ lived up to the titular motto and chose a more positive view. “The new single presents us with the same situation but reacts differently,” as we put it, “a refusal in the face of the employment grindstone which emerges with bright humanity intact.”…read full review at Various Small Flames here.
