EP Review – Colour Worn by Fine (2024) (Self released)

ColourWorn

After the sheer beauty and subsequent critical acclaim afforded their love, death, dreams, and the sleep between album of December 2022, Alice Kat and Liam Marsh (aka Fine) are already back with this superb Colour Worn EP that simply oozes their trademark crushed emotionality.
The release starts with As I Come Back, which is surely the most pertinent ode to social anxiety that anyone who has ever suffered with such an issue might ever hear as the hushed tones of Alice Kat slide through the cracks of stunning jangly slowcore to opine:

I can’t stay long
I need to get out
This place is too busy
These rooms are too loud
As I come back around
I swallow my pride
I let my guard down

As I let this go comfort creeps in
I can’t help this
Everything feels like it’s closing in on me

The slowcore continues in Wide Eyed / Sunrise as  Alice’ plaintive voice is augmented by Liam’s backing vocals, and the jangle is replaced by a simplistic piano foundation that never threatens to mask the pain of the ‘aftermath of lost love’ lyrics that they always render so perfectly.
The rest of the release continues on the same lyrical theme and returns to the signature sounds that those in the know have learned to adore them for. As such, the male and female vocal harmonies melt within one another and drift through the swirling fuzz-pop of Color Worn and Brightness, whereas the fuzz becomes residual in whatwouldyouthinkaboutmeknow and No One in the House as it is replaced by their own stunning brand of sparse, jangly indie-pop.
Fine is a truly wonderful act, and we are so lucky that they have found each other, as everything each one of them does from a musical perspective seems to effortlessly augment the other’s strengths to absolute indie-pop perfection.
