Album Review ~ Happy Days by Seasonal Falls (2024) (Self Released)

SeasonalFalls

Seasonal Falls is the new recording project of Switzerland-based Roman Gabriel (The Kind Hills, The Dentals) and Andrew Pelletier (Fur Trader and also the producer of the album), and this Happy Days debut album already feels like something of a familiar friend, not only because of the four beautiful singles that they have drip-fed us since January 2024 but also because of the way the release radiatea a feeling of drawing you into their confidence.
Consistently augmented by the most luscious, strangely warm melancholy imaginable, the hushed, introspective Vern Matz-style acoustic guitar-pop presented by the opening double salvo of the title track and Used To Be Fun sidles into deeper dulcet territories in the jangly indie-folk of Girlfriend, The Wind, and Half-Moon, which feels like the perfect union of Elliott Smith performing the Sam Koch back catalogue.
However, perhaps the standout tracks of the album emerge when the acoustic emphasis is replaced by subtle electric guitar riffs. Here, Lie Down, I Wish You All the Best, and Hey Girl! offer tight, twanging riffs that somehow never threaten to pierce the always-omnipresence beauty of the melodies, but simply augment them with a perfect sense of subtle disparity.
Happy Days is one of those albums that is destined to call you to spend time with it just when you most need it.
