If the preceding Flower of Devotion (2020) and Blue Skies (2022) albums have long since been considered the ultimate in going ‘out out’ music, then Dehd’s latest Poetry will undoubtedly soon be construed as ‘that album’ that gives you the balls to the wall gusto to make anything happen, such is its jangly verve and vigor.
From the Ducks Ltd jangly indie rock stylistics of Dog Days, Light On, and Shake to the tumbling, shambolic jangle-rock/indie-folk fusion of Hard To Love, Necklace, So Good, and Don’t Look Down, as well as the modern-day trash-pop-meets-Transvision Vamp sounds of Mood Ring, Knife, and Shale, which are driven by the consummate front woman vocals of Emily Kempf, Dehd provides an energy that often teeters on the edge of garage rock without ever losing any sense of jangly melody.
All of the big boys, including Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, have been clambering over themselves to heap praise on this latest release by this Chicago threesome; however, to their credit Dehd still feel so very “ours’ and will always be the darling of all the micro-blogs that really matter!
