EP Review ~The Interpretation of Indiepop Cultures by The Interpretation Cultures (2025) (Self released)

Yet another offering from the rapidly expanding Chaotic Pop Records label headed by Eko Sutrisno, the Makassar, Indonesia-based The Interpretation Cultures have expanded their Boxing Day single with three more tracks, creating a hybrid of 80s indie-pop perfection and modern bedroom-pop in this The Interpretation of Indiepop Cultures EP.
Commencing with the instrumental We Are TIC and its juxtaposition of The Lightning Seeds style airy guitar pop and playful The Go Team! layers of aural textures. Beyond the opener Falling Out Of Love With You (a cover of The 6th’s track) and the electronic inflected,  New Order influenced aesthetic of How Do You Believe , both offer a fragile post-punk jangly melancholy that is akin to The Boltons aesthetic, which is then augmented with perfect levels of almost no-fi production, whereas their version of their labelmates (Anselmus) My Life Is Better With Indiepop ramps up a cutesy,  precise twee-pop that is reminiscent of the Wattoo Wattoo brilliance.
However, the very best of the EP is heard in The Molly Pop Song and Distractions. Marrying the lo-fi, melodic, jangly post-punk vibe of the recent Shopfires sound to a perfect vocal disinterest that typifies the best of ‘cult indie-pop’, the superb essence is completed with rumbling basslines that are reminiscent of Fegmania era Robyn Hitchcock.
With another covers album already released (the e-researchers (cover compilation)) and well worth checking out (here), especially if you have a Sarah Records affection, The Interpretation Cultures look set to further cement the reputation of an Indonesian pop scene that is beginning to rule the jangly indie-pop roost at present.
