If you enjoy your jangle-pop with a modern indie rock twist, then “Patience”, the opener from Western Motel’s new EP “Badass Dragon”, could be the standout track of its kind until Ducks Unltd return with new material.
The song begins with a crystalline, isolated, jangled riff that evokes the introductions of acts like The Shop Window and Lost Ships before bursting into a more abrasive sound. It draws from the ramshackle indie rock of quintessentially North American/American bands such as Beeef or Biitchseat, treading a line just shy of The Violent Femmes’ punk attitude while still embracing a chopped out, truncated aesthetic.
The remainder of the release is undoubtedly sparser, yet no less glorious. In “I Didn’t Know” the incidental jangled riffs glide behind a veil of emotionality, suggesting where Elliott Smith might have ended up had he not felt compelled to lay everything bare. In contrast, “Theatrics” slowly chisels away at a definitive melody, anchored by a beautifully crunchy riff that chimes and leads the track towards being one of the Vancouver based trio’s finest moments.
The track is available on a 7″ single from Kingfisherz Blues. Support this act and the label by purchasing a copy here.
