Eggs on Mars Return After A Three Year Hiatus With Their Beautiful New “Good Morning (I Love You)” album

In another life, many moons ago, Eggs on Mars were a fresh-faced (just) post-college foursome from Kansas City, Missouri, who were signed to our Subjangle label based on their ability to seamlessly fit into the brilliant, melodic urban surf sound pioneered by the city’s acts such as Tennis Club and Wilson and the Catholics.
While that aesthetic was appealing, they soon encountered the parameters of normality brought on by various ‘adulting’ experiences—marriage, children, bills, careers, and so forth—that tend to engulf those of us who embrace societal norms. Consequently, their sound has gained a greater sense of maturity and cultivated a profound appreciation for ‘all things love’.
At their most impressive, tracks like “Inconsistent Cowpoke”, “Couldn’t Write”, and “Take Time” glide with retro-pop majesty, straddling the line between the more recent 60s-inspired sound of Alpine Subs and the shimmering, indie-pop languor of artists such as Magon and Armstrong.
Venturing beyond the 60s pop spectrum, the lush aesthetics of the title track, “Be For You”, and “And I Know” tentatively explore the boundaries of The Lemon Twigs’ 70s-pop freewheeling essence, with vocals that flirt with Burt Bacharach’s signature style.
However, the true highlights of this album embrace the lo-fi jangle that is increasingly prevalent in our favourite genre. The bass-heavy “Shooting Stars” and “That’s Alright” are enveloped in a perfectly imperfect under-production, which adds an extra layer of warmth and emotional depth to the overall experience.
Indeed, ‘adulting’ suits Eggs on Mars remarkably well.
