‘Someone’ once said, that the perfect pop song should be no more than three minutes in length. Well actually, it was two minutes, but that does not totally fit the agenda of this particular review and it’s my blog, so I offer no apologies for twisting fact.
Either way, Fine is the coming together of two fine (see what I’ve done there?) British indie acts in Lincoln’s Alice Kat and Sheffield’s Kid Chameleon. This duo not only join all the dots between (indie-)pop, three minutes and perfection, but do so with stunning multi-variants of jangled guitar work.
As such, in Whisper to the World (see below) we see them course Kat’s made for indie Mary Wyer / Wendy Pickles feminine strength style vocals (or any sort of female indie vocals that have not disappeared down the ‘hushed’ route) through fluttering Cub like jangly indie-pop. It’s insubstantial enough and beautiful enough, to insist upon Sarah Records comparisons.
Should I (see below) is just as jangly, but contains denser alt.pop textures that thrive upon by the vocal interplay and harmonies between the duo. Possibly the most memorable of this vignette of an EP, it hints at where the (must do one now, surely) eventual album has the potential to develop as it’s more mass appeal, core sound.
Finally, as if to underline the their ability have to go anywhere they want from a jangle perspective, they slow things down, add a lo-fi, fuzz laden gauze and return to the prettier side of indie-pop. It sounds very The Crystal Furs in general aesthetic, the perfect mix of jangle and organ contextualized twee.
I hope this act is not one of ‘those projects’ who get too busy with their main gigs to continue…they really are too good for that.
