Beat The Delete #0136 (weekly new music recommendations)

BTD0136

Thanks for joining us one more for Beat The Delete #0136...it is only a small bakers dozen of a list this week, but one that is so very perfectly formed.

I hope you find a new favourite or just fall back in love with an old one !!!

The Black Watch

TrackDays When The Rain FromHere & There (Album) Label:  ATOM Records Out:  Now
Over 30 years and now 20 albums in, it is is hard to imagine this John Andrew Fredrick project as ever having been more consistently beautiful across the length of an album.
This track is typical of the extra accentuation of the jangled riffs that the songs on this release are given. There just somehow seems more space for the beauty to sidle into.

The Rizzos

TrackBreslin From: How It Was (Album) Label: King Pizza Records l Out:  Now
Scrappy, garage-rock edged indie, with one eye seemingly always on the look out (and finding) the perfect jangled riff. This threesome from Brooklyn will appeal to fans of garage, indie-rock, emo (on much of the album) and jangle in equal measures.

Miracle Legion

TrackOut To Play From: We’ve Played This Measly Town Many Times (Live Album) Label:  The Mezzotint Label Out:  Now
If ever, at the gates of heaven, I need to prove my brilliance in order to gain entry, I will point to the fact that I have seen the Miracle Legion live on four occasions. This album, recorded at The Linda in Albany NY in 2016, just reminds me of the sheer emotionality of the Mark Mulcahy vocals and the bands’ sheer brilliance in general…entry to everlasting life is guaranteed !

Teose

TrackWhat’s Going On? From: What’s Going On (single) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
Superb mixture of left field indie, with a slight sense of The Slits obtuse and fabulously subtle jangled riffs, that sidle in and around the alt. rock aggression. The perfectly grumbling end of the jangle-pop genre, from this Scottish trio.

Happypills

TrackSandy FromSandy (Single) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
Happypills is a Japanese solo act who has little frenetic bursts of jangly indie-pop energy. Thankfully he appears to be in the middle of a period of letting his creative juices flow, as this is now the second time in a couple of weeks he has released his beautiful mix of fragile jangly riffs and subtle gaze.

Kissed Her Little Sister

TrackCome To Me FromSleeping Giant (Album) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
With the (only other) exception being Amanda Palmer, this recording project of Jeff Morisano achieves the near impossible by making the ukelele sound indisputably cool. “Endearing, fuzzy, jangly, lo-fi, bedroom, electro, ukelele jangle”, is not a sentence I type too often, but I will make an exception here !

Reardon Love

TrackPurple Hearts FromPurple Hearts (Single) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
This Hull based foursome seem to have had something of a musical paradigm shift, swapping the dulcet, post-punk laced melodies of their previous singles, for a more gregarious melodic bent, that thrives of an insanely catchy, dominant chiming riff. Their best yet.

In Contrast

TrackLafayette Park FromLafayette Park (single) Label:  Maple Street Music Out:  Now
Muted lo-fi, American Football style jangle-pop, coursed with the dulcet, twisted vibe of the Yo La Tengo riff book. For some reason the artist is described as ’emo’ in all the act’s profiles…but it is so very much better than that !

Israel’s Arcade

TrackIsrael’s Theme FromIsrael’s Theme (single) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
This is the solo project of Californian, Israel Pinedo, who juxtaposes chunky, early 60s jangLy surf rock riffs, with a perfect level of gregarious commerciality.

Vanessa Van Ness

TrackEarly Bus FromEarly Bus (single) Label:  Old Wizard Out:  Now
Strange, but eerily compelling mix of Nico style, spacious leftfield and ambient, indie-folk jangle. One of those sounds that shifts the paramenters of the jangle-pop genre, from this Brooklyn based multi-instrumentalist.

David Kingston

TrackTime to Forgive FromTime to Forgive (album) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
For fans of the indie-pop stylistics of the Johny Nocash vibe and the washed out melodies of Super 8 are going to love the modernity of this brilliant pop-rock.

Death by Ligers

TrackFear FromFear (single) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
Some equidistant between Wilco anti-folk and Pavement style alt rock/indie, this track by Idaho based, Death By Ligers, offers subdued jangled riffs in all the most original places.

Warm Coat

TrackDespite the Years FromDespite The Years (single) Label:  Self released Out:  Now
Submitted without any promo blurb and seemingly devoid of any bio at Spotify etc, it is hard to know what to say about this act, apart from they have released a simply stunning lo-fi, pop-rock meets fuzz masterpiece and their Twitter account states they are duo from Wales !
