Album Review – A Superior Athlete by Hoorsees (2022) (Kanine Records)

Hoorsees

The pandemic restrictions may have consumed us with boredom, if it was not for the fact that many of us enjoyed the extra time they afforded to languidly enjoy our more slacker tendencies.
A Superior Athlete, the second album of Parisian foursome, Hoorsees, basically presents an ode to such filler pursuits, referencing idle time spent indulging in TV binge-watching, digging out old musical loves and generally doing, nothing but ‘perfect nothing’.
Presented with the two familiar nuances that their debut eponymous album offered, this is an album separated by drive, attitude and incessance, rather than any differences in quality.
Initially Cream & Onion, Jansport and Blue Pants best represent a side of the album that batters it’s way around the same sort of ramshackle jangle-rock that acts like Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Kiwi Jr take to the edge of garage rock mayhem, whilst ultimately preventing a fall over that particular musical precipice, by virtue of the incessant jangled melodies that are threaded through the core.
However, Hoorsees are certainly not a (thrilling) one trick pony act and are able to course genuine beauty through their more sedate tracks. Here, Week-end At Bernies, I’m Wearing My Raincoat in Summer, Real Estate and TV In the Morning, marry a Melbourne dolewave sense of laconic, with jangled riffs and faux melodies that are  reminiscent of the Go Get Mum vibe, albeit augmented with riffs that are piercing with thie lucidity.
Hoorsees are rapidly becoming the flagship act of the always on form Kanine Records label and long may it continue.
