EP Review – Schafernaker by Schafernaker (Broken Down Records) (2022)

SchafernakerSchafer

Broken Down Records is the label run by the artist known as Johny Nocash, both to release his own works (under various guises, the latest being this superb Schafernaker project) and to let his big indie heart beat with the releases of critically acclaimed acts such as The Irony Board, The Salient Braves (I miss these massively!) and The Broken Heed.
This latest Nocash project, could well be his best yet if he can give it just a bit of longevity. Initially recorded for the Lights and Lines Album Writing Club in May 2022 which was essentially a competition run for indie acts to write and record an EP in just one month, the results of this project are truly superb.
Initially, the opening double salvo of Over and Over and No Lego suggest the artiste has a definite penchant for 90s guitar music. All The Chesterfields / The Frank and Walters in incessant rhythms riffs and tempos and then augmented with a burnished jangly Britpop muscularity, these tracks are truly superb.
The remaining two tracks take a totally apposite musical route. Visiting the quirk laden, jangle lavished/ravished, indie-pop of a modern day acts such as The Smashing Times, Nocash ensures that the more obtuse proclivities that are never far from his sound find the perfect home.
Always a label / act to keep an eye on for those who like their jangle-pop at the at end of the genre’s spectrum.
