EP Review – Bluest Year by Girl and Her Bad Mood (2022) (Haum Entertainment / Fist Valley Records)

GAHBMband

Neatly sidestepping Rudolph and his bloody reindeer gang this Xmas, Indonesian act, Girl and Her Bad Mood, release a debut Bluest Year EP  that is the perfect beautifully melancholic antidote for those whose sickeningly twee cheeriness at Xmas has been bolstered by the post pandemic landscape.
This amazing EP is presented in two primary nuances never really departing from a template that is covered in the jangliest dream-pop sound possible.
Initially, there is the plaintive, introspective sound of the Holy Now and The Blue Herons drifting through Drifted, Falling Out, and 2013/Bluest Year I’ve Had. All poise, hushed vocals and percussion, married to incidental jangled riffs that are caressed through the most fragile of gaze-laden production, this is the ultimate sound of laconic beauty.
However, the very best of the EP has just a fraction more bite. Here, High Tide and the simply superlative Graduation Song (if a track deserves to be nestled in a hipster’s collection as a 7″ vinyl single, then it is this one) add chiming riffs that pierce the general sense of the ethereal to optimal effect.
A debut so full of potential that every possible follow button should be firmly pressed to ensure any follow up is not missed.
