EP Review – Nombre Parfait by Hobby (2022) (Hidden Bay Records)
Ending a stellar 2022 for the Toulouse based Hidden Bay Records (predominantly) cassette label which has seen superb releases by the likes of Cœur-joie, Persica3 and Rush To Relax, they see out the year with possibly their best yet, with a Nombre Parfait EP that could cement Hobby as their erstwhile flagship act.
Dominated by an intra-release soft loud dynamic, the best of the release is heard in the opening double salvo of Jay and Life Hack as well as Medium Neutral Grey. Here, the sound crashes through the dulcet so very French jangle-rock foundation of labelmates Healess or fellow countrymen EggS, whilst augmenting it with the incessant rumbling energy that is reminiscent of the recent Ribbon Stage aesthetic.
When the urgent freneticism reclines into mid tempo, Deja Vu, Safety Rules and Au bord du réelmove towards a intriguing mixture of isolated Packs style twisted post-punk and the sort of piercing jangled riff lucidity akin to the Blanketman vibe. It is all slightly obtuse in the manner that compels rather than repels.
In a French jangle rock scene that is currently dominating, this act are probably just a full length release away from being considered the scenes finest proponent.
