EP Review – By The Sea by Humsikk (2023) (Guerilla Records)

Humsikk

Humsikk is the solo recording project of The Wellington and Grup Musik Hari Libur man Riftyza Gestandi who takes something of a departure form his decidedly lo-fi / bedroom-pop output of yesteryear to bring us a fleshed out aesthetic that truly benefits from both studio flourishes and input from musical friends.
By the Sea is rewarded, in typical Indonesian fashion, by the natural sense of fey that so many of the South East Asian acts effortlessly omit. The opening double salvo of Alone and By the Sea (featuring Amy Amanda & The Cottons) drifts with beautiful sedation into the uncluttered yet luscious indie-pop waters of the recent My Raining Stars demi sophisti-pop aesthetic, whilst keeping one foot firmly on a jangly twee-pop shoreline.
However, the very best of the release contains more bite. Here, Tell Me What You Want commences with early-era Tallies style fuzz-pop, upon which is juxtaposed the sound of vocal delivery so twee and irresistibly perky that all parameters between fuzz-pop, indie-pop, and twee-pop are merged together without any semblance of conflict.
This new, more substantial version of Humsikk, certainly shows the potential for great things to come in the future.
