EP Review – 2 by The Valderamas (2023) (Safe in the Rain Records / Howlin Banana)

TheValderams

French act (based in Rennes) The Valderamas do not release often. In fact, this 2 EP is their first new music since their equally imaginatively named 1 EP was released, as they foist perfect jangly indie-pop meets Twee-pop upon what would probably be an adoring following if their release frequency was as perfect as their musical quality and alluring sense of unmitigated cool.
In this world of delightful acceptance, where it is ok for anyone to consider themselves as pretty much anything and fully expect people to back their conclusions, The Valderamas are plainly a Spanish indie-pop act trapped in the bodies of three frenchmen.
The opening trio of I Don’t Wanna Fight, Secret, and Morning Face take the languid jangly riffs and cute semi-lisp vocals of acts like The Yellow Melodies, Autoescuela, and Alpaca Sports and juxtapose it with the perfect fully formed jangly indie-pop of the early Kings of Convenience aesthetic as the vibe of the Madrid Popfest consumes the sound.
It is only in the final Maybe You Know How I Feel track that The Valderamas break free into the realms of midtempo pop as chiming riffs join the jangle in a sound reminiscent of their erstwhile ‘Spanish Countrymen’, Madbil. It’s smooth, jangly indie-rock with every sense of the genre’s bombast removed from it.
A truly effervescent 11-12 minutes of jangly indie-pop that my mouse somehow seems to just keep bravitating to even some weeks after release ! Let’s hope it another five years does not elapse before their next release.
