Album Review – The High Span by The High Span (2023) (Spinout Nuggets)

ThehIghSpanAlbum

The High Span is a musical project based in Rochester, Kent and features three experienced, yet unjaded, musical souls in Kevin Younger (of Armitage Shanks, Ye Ascoyne d’Ascoynes, Subway Sect, Baby Birkin, The Speed of Sound and others), Mark Aitken (of Ye Ascoyne d’Ascoynes, The Men From Memphis, Bob Collins & The Full Nelson, These Guilty Men and others) and Jimmy Moore (of Pod, One Free Fall and revered Canadian alt-rockers Rusty).
When the very first paragraph of the release bio includes the notable names and acts listed above, you know there is a very good chance that you are about to listen to something very special and perhaps something so very 90s English.
Thankfully, the ‘pedigree promise’ is fully realized in an album full of obvious 90s influences. Initially, there is the definitive presence of the decades’ alt.pop with Andromeda Jones, Homes Under The Hammer, and Not In A Good Way all offering the quirky mannerisms, overly slick production, and alternate reality that is so reminiscent of the earliest  sound of Space, albeit constantly augmented with more downplayed, faux jangling riffs than the Liverpool-based act ever imbued.
At the opposite end to this sleek pop are tracks such as Tumbling Down, Boomer, and the immense Nee Naw that all offer ramshackle jangle rock in the typically bruised and battered Medway Sound style of early Close Lobsters, whereas nestled somewhere in between the sleek and battered are the mid tempo jangly indie-pop offerings of Mousey Wheel, Listen To Records, My Memoria, Thank You, and Here Comes The Background that all have the glorious quirk addled ‘The Hymn for Cigarettes’ style anthemic quality of the Darren Hayman / Hefner essence, albeit with extra percussive force.
In a sea of glorious Spinout Nuggets releases, especially over the last 18 months, this is the album you will sea on the most luxurious of vessels. Truly fantastic stuff.
