EP Review – Rockets in the Sky by Johny Nocash (2023) (Broken Down Records)

Johny Nocash

Those of you who have followed Johny Nocash’s music with any regularity will know that there is an omnipotent sense of everyman melancholic beauty that always manages to shine through the general, stoically grounded ‘this is our lot’ malaise of his aesthetic.
Rockets in the Sky does nothing to really dissuade such opinions about his vibe, but somehow still manages to emphasize itself as his best release so far with subtle additions to his sound that shift the holistic to the ‘next level’.
Perhaps there is just an added sense of ‘flourish’ about the release that gives it more gravity with the title track and Together commencing with almost sophisti-pop frivolity before gradually making the descent into his typical jangly lo-fi gaze swamped emotionality.
Similarly, it could be the added layers of aural textures in the simply stunning How Green Are Your Eyes and How Green Are Your Eyes Pt2, which feel like Thom Yorke‘s solo work drizzled against a backdrop of the most stunning neo-acoustic and guitar-pop.
Both tracks are Nocash at a most unprecedented level of beauty and act as something of a worthy introduction to the near six-minute epic surf-gaze of a closing World Outside track that is so reminiscent of the Gushh or Middleneck brilliance.
If Johny Nocash is not on your radar as of yet and you have not pressed the Bandcamp or Spotify follow button, then now would be the time to make that move as he is just getting increasingly more essential with every release.
