EP Review – Flowery Melancolia by The Jansen, LoOn and The Carolines (Paska Records) (2023)

Flowery (1)

Now that bedroom pop has become a definitive thing, it is sometimes difficult not to be swamped by the deluge of new music to check out on the various streaming platforms we all frequent.
Add to this an absolute plethora of sample releases from a whole host of new and usually short-lived digital labels, and it is a wonder that we ever really ‘find’ anything that justifies more than a cursory hover of our cursors.
However, this split release Flowery Melancolia EP, out of the ‘long-lived’ Indonesian Paska Records label (established 2006), slipped straight onto our radar due to several recommendations from readers, the multiple nature of which was not only unusual but also totally justified.
Essentially all three acts are steeped in the aesthetic of twee-pop that the twee gods of the 80s and 90s intended as the genre’s sound. As such, Loons crumble gloriously deadpan, UK southern estuary accented disinterest through a Betty and the Werewolves / Talulah Gosh jangling cutesy, whereas The Carolines juxtapose Love Exposure era Coo Woo chime to augment their particular version of twee.
As good as all of the above truly is, the very best of the release only emerges when The Jansen encase their twee machinations with the modern fuzz-laden meets C86 sounds that immediately draw comparisons to the faux melodies and perfect noise of acts such as The Photocopies, Westkust, and Airport Girl to bring an energy to the release that takes it solidly past the realms of merely cute.
One of those release you could easily have missed but you are so glad you have found.

Also featured is one track from each artist taken from the recent, and very good, three way split indiepop compilation Flowery Melancholia. It’s from Indonesia (where else, eh?) and is out now via Paska Records. Janglepop has a review. […]
