Virgin of the Birds

Track: Moon Chariot From: Viper Summer (EP) Label: Self released Out: 
Following a series of EPs, Seattle‘s Virgin of the Birds caught the attention of Edinburgh label Song, By Toad, with albums Winter Seeds and Secret Kids seeing them join a roster including the likes of Meursault and Adam Stafford. The company felt fitting for a project straddling lo-fi folk and left-field art rock, where literate lyrics are met with experimental sounds, and inventiveness need not come at the expensive of emotion.
The Scottish link continues with new EP Viper Summer, with members of Edinburgh folk outfit Storm the Palace joining to add a new dimension to the project, as captured by lead single ‘Moon Chariot’. …Read the full review at Various Small Flames here

Clueless is The High Wire’s second release in 2023, a 2 & 1/2 minute take on aspiration and motivation that sees the duo of Alexia Hagen and Tim Crompton singing together over interwoven guitars and keyboards, displaying their 60s – 90s pop and indie influences (…The Beach Boys ‘Friends’, The Go-Betweens ‘16 Lovers Lane’ and Galaxie 500’s ‘On Fire’, among many)….from the promo submission.

There is so much to ‘Silver Skies’ that appears to our twee jangle loving ways, the pristine guitars of course but also the way this singer can make off with the grand prize because they have the panache of a Coldplay anthem in their sights and they are going to make it their own…see full review at mp3hugger here

Silver Car Crash

Track: Pleasure Zone From: Shattered Shine (album) Label: Crafted Sounds Out: Album out 15 June 2023
Silver Car Crash’s new track “Pleasure Zone” seems to find itself in the open space left in the bouncy interplay between the mesmeric guitar riff in the upper register and the melodic bassline in the lower. Vocalist Justin Bennett fills that void with lines like “I couldn’t stand myself until I learned to live alone,” “I wanted to escape my life,” and “I couldn’t understand anything that I would dream” before dispensing with all unnecessary images and falling into the repetition of “accuracy.” …See full review at The Alternative here

Youth Valley

The Athens based Youth Valley release their debut album Lullabies For Adults on June 23 2023. Hurricane is the first single to be lifted and given its lyrics give rise to the album’s title that sounds like a wise choice. Track: Ice Pack From: Call Me When You Get There (album) Label: Hartlin Vinyl Out: Album release date TBA
Coolidge’s upcoming album features “Ice Pack,” a shoegaze-saturated track that highlights her dry sensibilities as she recounts past eye injuries such as burned corneas and getting pepper flakes in her eye.
