Album Review – Potentially Venus by Wireheads (2023) (Tenth Court)

wIREHEADS

Six years after the release of their last superlative full-length album, Lightning Ears, Adelaide’s Wireheads seem determined to ensure that they return to the fray with a  Potentially Venus album that provides even more of their dynamic signature ‘at you from all angles’ aesthetic.
As such, opener Hook Echo, 1000 Red Venomous Snakes, and lead single Life After Winter juxtapose perfect vocal  ‘dolewave disinterest’ with an apposite energy that fills every inch of the listening experience with a thrill that is immaculately shaped out of ramshackle jangle-rock. Equally, the energy is driven off this jangle rock cliff and plunges deep into crunchy garage rock waters in Persistence Resistance, and Detective.
As thrilling as the above aesthetic is, this album truly thrives when the tempo abates somewhat. Here the more traditional Go Get Mum-style, dulcet dolewave of Killer Bee and Flowers will appeal to those who prefer their Australiana drenched in Triple J 90s jangle-pop, whereas the album signs off with the Workhorse-style jangle edged post-punk of Maybe Rabies, The Cascadia Fault Line, and Drown Yr Frowns.
It is great that this act is back after such a long hiatus and completely untamed or unchanged by the ravages of time !
