Album Review – Crabber Crabber Hey ! by Crabber (2023) (Jigsaw Records)

Crabber

The 1990s recordings of this German foursome drifted back onto the internet a few years ago and received such critical acclaim that the internet was almost bursting with anticipation when they announced they were working on new music.
Crabber Crabber Hey! is Crabbers third album since 2018 and is arguably their best yet as they take us on a journey through what makes them tick musically in an album so full of verve that it never lets the listener settle into ‘easy listening’ at any point.
As such, the title track, Dogged by Fortune, Driftwood, and Going Overground caresses the melodic intent and subtle crunch of 70s power-pop through the more gentile end of the buzzsaw guitar tones of The Undertones/Buzzcocks incessance.
When the incessant tempo resides a tad, the more refined melodies of the superlative standout and lead single, D.I.M., are joined by the mid-release triple salvo of Bad Company, Party in Mind, and The Birds Are Bored to offer an aesthetic reminiscent of the muscular, melodic jangly guitar pop of 90s acts such as The Frank and Walters and The Chesterfields.
Accusations of uniformity may always follow this act…however their fans would not want it any other way!
