The Pink Frosts

Track: A Smile Away  From: A Smile Away  (single) Label: Self released Out: Now
For fans of the jangly post-punk sensibilities of Echo & the Bunneymen, The Sound and The Cure. This act seem intent of caressing the jangle back into a modern day post-punk that has moved towards fractious agitation rather than ‘tunes’ of late.

The Five Year Plan

Track: 6 Feet Under From: 1985(Album) Label: Old Bad Habits Label Out: Album out 04 September 2023
A brief description of what happened in the intervening thirty-eight years:
Tim Rippington and Rob Pursey, the band’s main songwriters, went on to play in many other bands – and are still playing now.
Tim joined The Flatmates for a while, then The Beatnik Filmstars, who toured the USA with the Flaming Lips in 1996 and recorded a number of Peel sessions. He later released new material as The Forest Giants and The Short Stories. He’s currently recording with The Charlie Tipper Rebellion. Tim runs Breaking Down Recordings.
Rob, meanwhile, was one of the founder members of Talulah Gosh, didn’t much like it and left after three gigs, but re-convened with Amelia Fletcher and Peter Momtchiloff to form Heavenly, who had a good deal of indie success. Rob and Amelia are now playing and recording as Swansea Sound and The Catenary Wires, as well as running Skep Wax records…From the Bandcamp release bio here.

The Small Intestines

Track: Horse Riding  From: Hide In Time  (EP) Label: Meritorio Records / Lost & Lonesome Out: Album out 29 September 2023
The Aussie band brings the jangles, but leans more towards the homegrown sort, echoing the indie pop past of Go-Betweens or The Bats. “Horse Riding,” glides the lines between bittersweet and bubbly, feeling like a single lost to time. The band features members of Chook Race and Peach Time, acting as a respite to band members in down-time between their other outfits…See full review at Raven Sings The Blues here.

Wetsuit

Track: Twiggy  From: Sugar, I’m Tired  (EP) Label: Substitute Scene Records Out: Album out 17 August 2023
With their upcoming album due out on August 17th, the band are following recent single “Local Celebrity” with “Twiggy,” a song dedicated to the loss of a dear friend.
Rather than mourn however, it would seem as though Becker and Nils (who had both worked together with their titular friend) are choosing to remember the brightness of her life, her radiant personality, and he drive to have some fun in the sunshine. With a laid back guitar progression that seems to fit somewhere between surf pop and twangy indie, there’s a sense of dreamy momentum in Becker’s writing. While it steams from loss and subsequent hurt, it’s really a beautiful rememberance of friendship and the power of feeling accepted…Read full review at Post Trash here.

Anyone who still slides Nirvana’s MTV Uncut into their stereo (sorry, I know that it is very old of me !?) will appreciate this mix of jangly, 90s encrusted alt rock from Oslo’s Podcasts. Really looking forward to this self titled album !

Bridge Dog

Track: Working At It  From: Working At It  (single) Label: SelF released Out: Now
Slightly skew jangled guitar riffs married to what feels like South East Asian vocal sweetness and the slightest of gaze sensibilities, Bridge Dog are offering all manner of sweetness from their Sydney base.

Vinny Peculiar

Track: Peace And Love  From: How I Learned To Love The Freaks (album) Label: Self released Out: Album out September 2023
Alan Wilkes aka Vinny Peculiar has been putting out albums for the past twenty years to considerable critical acclaim. Landing this September, ‘How I Learned to Love the Freaks’ will be his thirteenth studio release.
The record is inspired by Hippy culture, the summer of love and the socio-political awakenings of the late 1960s. In part it’s tribute to an emerging free-thinking youth culture, the risks they took, the values they espoused, the sacrifices they made, with the failings and ultimate implosion culminating in “Death of the Counterculture”…read full review at Broadway World here.

Darren Sullivan and the Littoral Drift

Track: No Discord  From: Verdure  (album) Label: Self released Out: Now
Darren Sullivan and Josh Dylan Peters form the duo Darren Sullivan and the Littoral Drift. Sullivan handles music production and songwriting while Peters focuses on drum arrangements and rhythm. They have been collaborating for several years. They recently released Verdure.
This album showcases a diverse blend of punk rock, heavy metal, folk, electronic and indie experimentation. It features prominent vocals and includes spontaneous, energetic jams. The lyrics explore themes of love lost, grief, celebration and rebirth.
There are a whopping fifteen songs on the release and it starts with “Eliza” which is a sort of spirited and off kilter song. Some of it feels punk but other elements are quite inventive especially the bass sound. It got my attention…see full review at Pitch Perfect here.

Yellow Flower Living Water

Track: It’s Nothing  From: The Great Unconformity  (EP) Label: Self released Out: Now
Perhaps I am stretching the boundaries of new music as this seem to slide under my ‘jangle radar’ in February 2023 when it was released. However, with it’s typically sweet South East Asian vocals married to the most vibrant of jangly indie-pop guitar riffs this wonderful track/EP deserves to be heard!

Madbil

Track: Por Qué en el Norte? From: Por Qué en el Norte? (single) Label: Hanky Panky Records Out: Now
Madbil have perfected the art of simultaneously taking the playfulness of Spanish tonto-pop and augmenting it with the of contemporary jangle-pop. Their first music since December 2021 is well worth the wait.

Lost Film

Track: Little Things Forever  From: Keep It Together (album) Label: Relief Map Records Out: Now
Real indie rock glitter in this shiny opening salvo to Lost Film’s forthcoming LP Keep It Together. The guitar licks run round and round like a daydream carousel. The lyrics have the quality of a cipher. Something about a relationship and prospects of spiritual growth…read full review at Humpday here.

Pale Puma is a quartet formed around singer-songwriter Django Duijns and includes Rosie Derksen, Remy de Kok, and Roemer Vermeulen.
A track from the debut album “Haunted By Dreams That Were Never My Own” released on September 8th, produced by Marien Dorleijn (Moss, Opera Alaska) and label co-founder Frans Hagenaars.
There are a lot of things I love, such as a propulsive rhythm section, a guitar riff that weaves through the gaps, an enveloping synth, and a simple and catchy melody. Check it out as a newcomer to the DIIV, Beach Fossils, and Alvvays routes…read full review at Breaking Latest News here.

Punch Needle

Slacker rock, surf rock and neo-pysche all thrown together within washed out textures and endearing jangled riffs. Music to accompany any moment of relaxation in the sunshine.

Grand Drifter & The Cascarino

Track: The Summer Song  From: The Summer Song (single) Label: Self released Out: Now
Grand Drifter is joined by fellow purveyors of sunny singer-songwriter tunes, The Cascarino for the non-album single “The Summer Song“. This one features a bed of piano and acoustic guitars, layered with electric organ, spacious electric guitar, and the same light-as-a-feather vocals that contribute to the track’s blissful early morning feeling.
If “Beautiful Praise” was like waking up in the morning, “The Summer Song” is the perfect soundtrack to happily preparing breakfast in a fuzzy robe and slippers. The combination of instruments and textures on this track provide a full and lovely orchestrated feel without ever feeling overdone.

Armstrong

Track: Really Saw The Light  From: Really Saw The Light  (single) Label: Self released Out: Now
Julian Pitt (AKA Armstrong) does this from time to time. Just slips out the most beautiful digital single you could possibly imagine. Perhaps they are tracks that don’t quite fit on his releases or they are tunes that just come to him sporadically…either way they always seem to cement his burgeoning reputation for sophisti-pop beauty.

Aaron Hunter Dennis

Track: Conquering Kangaroo  From: Conquering Kangaroo (single) Label: Self released Out: Now
Conquering Kangaroo speaks to the subconscious, coming in like a daydreamed steam engine, with guitars as tectonic plates and fireflies, and at one point, Jesus himself. It is curiously uplifting, even as it invites you into a somewhat dark and abstract history. This is the first single from the upcoming Aaron Hunter Dennis EP, recorded in Joshua Tree and the high sierras after the songwriter’s recent success with a placement on the HBO hit series “Shameless.”
A layered and kaleidoscopic collection, at once dreamy and dangerous, like the first wildflowers after a fire, Aaron’s songs manifest the mischievous energies from the places they were created. Likened to Tom Petty’s pop sensibilities and King Crimson’s color palette, Aaron forges a fascinating new path through today’s indie folk rock…from the promo submission
