It’s been well over two and a half years since the Melbourne-based quintet of Muma Ganoush added something gloriously weird to the city’s dolewave scene that was in serious danger of consuming itself with uniformity.
Finally back, Day in the Tub is the flyer single from a Tub EP that they will be releasing on August 25 and serves to remind us perfectly of how well this act’s previous The Big Beam album of November 2020 (also via cassette label Marthouse Records) managed to blend the different appeals of varying genres.
If the above album always had a semblance of psyche-pop as part of the mix, this single drops that particular allure in favour of the sounds of indie-chic modernity.
As such, the truncated post-punk of acts such as Cola and The Wife Guys on Reddit is coursed through the agitated, spiky, angular riffs of The Wireheads whilst being rounded off by the perfectly disinterested that only the modern-day Aussies or the 1990’s Britpop chanteuses can do justice to.
All follow buttons have been pressed firmly to ensure I do not miss the full EP when it is released, as this single promises further weird, blended brilliance.
