Album Review – Bob Sings and Plays by Bobby Sutliff (2023) (Career Records)

BobbySutliff
As detailed in the release bio by Ron Sanchez (Donovan’s Brain and founder of Career Records), this solo release by The Windbreakers legend Bobby Sutliff was never meant to be released as it was the music he recorded for pleasure at his home studio before he passed away from cancer in August 2022.
Thank goodness his family and long-time friend Sanchez released them to the world, as this is jangle-pop in every sense of the term and a sound that will certainly appeal to those whose love for the genre centers around the 1960s.
Of course, The Byrds-like / Byrdsian are the terms of the laziest of journalists, as very few bands can reach such jangly heights. However, in tracks best represented by Come On Home, It All Fades Away, and The Man That Wrote Home Sweet Home, Sutliff manages to replicate the crystalline, smooth tones of his heroes guitar riffs better than just about any other act I have heard to date.
Similarly, the 60s homage is also heard in the slightly washed-out, subtle jangly psychedelics of Find My Way Home, You Should Have Known Better, and 12th of February that work within the sort of jangly parameters that The Left Banke excelled within.
A wonderful tribute to the talent of a legend of the genre.
