Album Review -Heimweh Meisterwerke by Die Zärtlichkeit (2023) (Tapete Records)

DieZ

Sounding uniquely ‘jangly Germanic’ in the same manner as many of the acts on the 1990’s Marsh Marigold label did, Cologne-based foursome Die Zärtlichkeit finally confirm their obvious jangle-pop credentials with this simply superlative Heimweh Meisterwerke album that flirts with and ultimately masters, several of the genre’s more beautiful nuances.
As such, the beautiful sophistication of Nach Hause, Reptil, and Gestalten hark back to an age when Paul Heaton was coursing languid vocal sweetness through The Housemartins and The Beautiful South’s jangly sohisti-pop as they proffer the slight melancolic feel of Sandra’s Wedding-style industrial town glib.
80s/90s jangly indie-pop is also visited in Ein Kurzer Weg, Geteilt, Kaiju, and Star as frontman Andreas Fischer straps on delightfully subtle Morrissey vocal inflections to supplement the sound of the more fragile end of The Smiths catalog, whereas the mid-album double salvo of Stimmen and Südfriedhof increase the tempo and drive straight forward into The Frank and Walters incessant guitar territories.
The album is all in German but adroitly proves that the quality jangle-pop has no real language.
