Album Review – Penelope by Small Crush (2023) (Asian Man Records)

SmallCrush

Four years after their debut eponymous album had all the micro-blogs that really matter falling over themselves to ‘like the album the most’, Small Crush are finally back with a follow-up that will do everything to strengthen their reputation as the finest of jangly garage-pop denizens.
As might be expected after a four-year hiatus, the aesthetic has not stood still. There is a definite sense of increased propulsion around Rumblin Tummy, 5, Be Back Soon, and This Time Around that offer a new sense of almost jangly pop-punk style ‘snide’ in the same manner as recent newcomer acts such as Local Derby and Blues Lawyer.
However, the album’s finest moments still revolve around their more familiar signature sound. Here, Broke Both Your Legs, Home, Running, and This Time Around excel in offering jangly, languid, slacker-rock sounds that heave with a cool disinterest that is cemented by the female vocals of Logan Hammond to offer a vibe that excels within Hazel English and Frankie Cosmos realm.
It’s great to have Small Crush back them back in a form that is even more vital.
