Album Review – Gathered Together by Pop Crimes (Howlin Banana Records / Safe In The Rain Records / Les Disques Du Paradis)

PopCrimes

The critical acclaim afforded their Debuts EP (2019) and the glorious Up To The Moon / There Were Smiles single (2021), added to the fact that this band are something of a Howlin Banana / French ‘supergroup’ consisting of members of En Attendant Ana, Special Friend and EggS means that it feels almost ‘strange’ to announce this Gathered Together release as Pop Crimes debut album, such is their ingrained presence on the French indie-rock psyche.
Thankfully, this quartet ensures that they maintain their momentum by sticking to the same template that has assured them of their early success. As such, languid Pavement-like, flat-stringed riffs are stretched through the gorgeous faux pop melodies of No More Cryin’, My Friends, Please Come Back In The Game, and All That Time, whereas the jangle rock of acts such as The Wends and labelmates En Attendant Ana offer a dynamism that borders on perfect shambolic.
An album of superb energy.
