Slipping surreptitiously into the Spotify’ release radars’ of those of us that still find jangle-pop and all it’s adjacent genres so very essential, this Figuring it Out EP by Melbourne-based duo, Local Derby (Elsie Lange and Luke Henriques-Gomes), acts as something of a neat summation to all that is so pertinent about the city’s still-burgeoning jangle-pop scene.
As such, Forgive Forget, Caught Up, and Dappled Lights saunter directly along the dolewave meets jangly indie-pop path that city acts such as Ciggie Witch and Ocean Party furrowed, augmented by an Elsie Lange vocal delivery that is so absolutely cool and quintessentially ‘Aussie disinterested’ that it makes ‘slacker queen’ Courtney Barnett’s aesthetic feel almost dynamic in comparison.
Of course, the entire EP cannot be based on such a sense of ‘languid sidle’. As such, inertia is prevented by the energy, snipe, and genuine grit of Dying to Know and Bad Side, which fall somewhere between the deliberation of an act like Possible Humans and the jangle-rock energy of Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever.
A debut that just leaves you itching for more !
