Single Review – October They’ll Be by Fine (2023) (Self released)

Fine

Boston/Sheffield (UK) duo Liam Marsh and Alice Kat (aka Fine) are back with a beautiful October They’ll Be single that simultaneously moves their sound onto a different paradigm whilst still retaining the beauty of the signature sound we have all grown to love.
As such, Alice Kat’s voice drives the first three quarters of the track as it teems with her inimitable hushed vocal sweetness and melancholy as she delivers lyrics about unrequited, lost, or losing love that have a ‘Fine-typical’ open-ended meaning that invites the listener to make their own decision upon their gravitas.
Eventually the emotionality is intensified as Marsh adds a masculine sense of semi-desperation to the final quarter of the track, which just feels so engorged by sheer, uncontrollable feeling.
The beautiful ‘fine-isms’ above are augmented by a new piano vibe that simply twinkles in the background as opposed to dominating and making the whole thing a ballad. Somehow, it adds an emphasis to what feels like key moments in the track while also offering a cinematic nuance. Hopefully it is an addition the duo will explore more fully in their forthcoming EP, which will be out in February/ March 24.
The most beautiful portrayal of the palpable ache of love imaginable.
