EP Review – By Your Side by Dear Boy (2024) (Fleshtone Records)

ByYourSide

Dear Boy is the moniker of the solo recording project of Strasbourg-based multi-instrumentalist Michael Dard, who has produced a debut EP that simultaneously wafts with the jangly anglophile indie-pop of 80s yesterday while still managing to take a seat at the same table as the modern greats.
As such, the opening triple salvo of A Spell on Me, the title track, and Awaiting A Sign hint at the crushed, lo-fi jangly melancholy of recent lo-fi acts such as The Boltons, The Field Music, Flower Crown, and The Smashing Times, whilst always managing to keep one eye on providing an endearing juxtaposition with the genuine pop sensibilities and cruising melodies of twee-pop acts such as The Ballet and U.S. Highball.
Certainly one to watch for the future, this act has already been picked up by Fleshtone Records, and the vinyl 7″ is available by contacting them at romain.blandre@bbox.fr.
