Album Review – Fairweather Friend by The Umbrellas (Tough Love Records / Slumberland Records)

FairweatherFriend

After the sheer brilliance of their Maritime EP of 2019 (via Discontinuous Innovation) and what felt like the sudden emergence of the jangle-pop genres latest best act when they released their eponymous debut album in 2021, this latest Fairweather Friend album not only cements their place at the same table as the moden day jangle-pop greats but also etches in stone their position as Slumberland Records / Tough Love Records flagship act. High praise indeed, but undoubtedly worthy praise.
This second full-length release reminds us why everything about this band just seemed to click with such immediacy with their adoring public, and even if their new-found production bombast might engender the disdain of those with hipster persuasions who revel in their view of the ‘absolute cool’ of no-fi bedroom-pop, the fact is that most of us will revel in the vibrant, breezy, jangly indie-pop of Three Cheers, Echoes, Games, Gone, When You Find Out, and P.M., all of which could, will, and should appear on just about every self-reflecting jangle-pop playlist you stumble upon over the proceeding few weeks.
In short The Umbrellas are back and ready to be fully crowned as the best.
