EP Review – Butter EP by The Klittens (2024) (Self released)

TheKlittens

Despite the sparsity of their back catalogue, this Butter EP being only their second release after April 2022’s Citrus EP,  the Dutch quintet of The Klittens have already achieved the remarkable accomplishment of uniting both the micro-blogs that matter and the glossy zines (…that really matter) in their gushing praise.
Perhaps the reason for all the love is genuine originality as The Klittens have the propensity to draw from both the jangly post-punk energies of the 80s girl fronted post-punk acts whilst simultaneously ensuring the overall aesthetic remains steadfastly their own by employing a core jangly guitar tone that dismisses the tinny angularity that post-punk modernity tends to gravitate towards, in favour of a choppy, smooth twang that enables their sound to have the flexibility to explore various musical nuances.
As such the stand out opener of Universal Experience and Reading Experience hints at the playfulness of jangly indie-pop whilst remaining rooted to post-punk courtesy of the sheer dominance and resonance of its’ dominating riff.
In comparison, Atlas and Eye Contact are augmented by a reduction in tempo, and increases in dulcet and the disinterested Lewsberg style semi-spoken word as everything amalgamates to offer the best that the modern post-punk scene has to offer.
