Heartfelt Reimaginings: Huan-Hua Chye’s (Miscellaneous Owl) Inventive Covers Collection

If you missed the release of February’s ‘The Wanting Chemical’ album, this ‘Good Bones (Covers Vol. 2)’ compilation could be the perfect opportunity to discover the eclectic brilliance of Huan-Hua Chye, frontwoman of Gentle Brontosaurus, and her solo project, Miscellaneous Owl.
The Madison, Wisconsin-based artist has made notable contributions over the years to the PRF Tribute Series and this covers album features many of these. The album predominantly shines within the realms of jangly, melodic noise-pop, showcasing covers like ‘Senses Working Overtime’ (XTC), ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’ (The Chiffons), and a more faithful rendition of Dinosaur Jr’s ‘Feel The Pain’ all of which simmer with crunch, distortion and reverb to offer the albums most abrasive tracks. These tracks seamlessly transition into a Hater-esque melancholic noise with ‘Star Witness’ (Neko Case) and ‘April Fool’, courtesy of a subtle reduction in tempo and production clarity.
Yet, the album truly stands out with tracks such as “Saturday” (Sparklehorse), “Glass Hotel” (Robyn Hitchcock), and “Ribbon of Darkness” (Gordon Lightfoot). These songs have a moderate pace and fit well within the jangly style similar to Soccer Mommy, Snail Mail, or Lucy Dacus, creating a touching contrast between crushed emotionality and feminine strength that captures the spirit of such bedroom pop chanteuses.
Good Bones (Covers Vol. 2) is a testament to Huan-Hua Chye’s versatility and deep appreciation for diverse musical influences. Whether you’re a long time fan or new to her solo Miscellaneous Owl work, this collection offers a fresh perspective on beloved classics and hidden gems alike, making it a rewarding listen for anyone with an ear for inventive, heartfelt covers.
