Album Review – Summer Sampler | Vol. II by Various Artists (Heavenly Creature Records)

hEAVENLYCREATURE (1)

Not too much is known about the Heavenly Creature Records label, other than they are based in Scotland, are run by a lass called Lauren and they refer to themselves as a non-profit label, which is effectively the same as every other small indie label !
Where they do tend to stand out though, is that they have become synonymous with being among the finest purveyors of a new breed of act that have embraced the possibilities (…and whirring beauty) that the modern fuzz-pop/rock movement offers.
This, there latest sampler, provides their best synopsis so far of the various nuances of melodic fuzz-pop that the label consistently embraces. In the more gentile part of the release the crooning, laconic, lo-fi fuzz of Red (Flesh Tape), the Mo Troper style power-pop inflections of the superlative stand out of Go Forth Find Hope Grow Wings (Jordan C Weinstock!) and the Momma style indie-chanteuse feel of Fake Empire (Best Bear) all feel so atuned to the typical essence of the label.
However, those that follow the label more avidly will know that they always have the propensity to back the less conventional ‘outlier’. As such this sampler featureS the beautiful fragile, almost non existent shoegaze of Tugboat (MothMom), before increasing the tempo and intensity with the Man Behind Tree style battered fuzz/ power-pop of Wannabe by Spank Hair.
For those of you who love their melodic fuzz-pop / rock, served with originality and jangly essences, this label and their acts are well worth a follow !
