EP Review ~ Ultra-Modern Rain by The Early Mornings (2022) (Practise Music)

TheEarlyMornings

Manchester trio, The Early Mornings, follow up on the brilliance of the June 2021 release of their debut Unnecessary Creation EP (incidentally, the debut will be the b-side offering on the vinyl release) to offer us a follow up, Ultra-Modern Rain EP, that takes us on a journey through a modern post-punk landscape that is becoming increasingly entwined with a jangle-adjacent sound as it grows in momentum.
At its core, It’s Not What You Want, the title track and First Words grab at the rumbling basslines of the Daisy-Chain sound and augment them with the isolated riffs and anti-melodies that are so akin to the recent Dry Cleaning aesthetic, whilst assuming the female vocal disinterest of the Brit-Rock chanteuses of acts like Sleeper and Elsatica. All dry, dank, and dulcet, it is a sound that typifies the best of modern post-punk.
However, the very best of Ultra-Modern Rain is heard when the sound becomes more frenetic, perhaps even a tad deranged. Love’s Not Heard and Refresher contrast isolated twang-laden guitars with Primo!-style edgy anxiety. It’s roughshod, perfectly shambolic, somewhat battered, and offers gloriously unhinged dynamism.
The modern post-punk wrecking ball keeps on rolling and The Early Mornings have the potential to smash it through everything in their way !
