EP Review – Crossing Towns by Lost Tapes (blue-very label and Shelflife Records)

LostTapes

Barcelona based duo, Lost Tapes ( Raul Jimenez of Tokyo Sex Destruction and It’s Not Not and Pau Roca of La Habitación Roja) have collaborated with all the best small labels with the biggest indie hearts in recent years, having released with Beko, Cloudberry Records, Sunday Records and Koclicko Records, such has been their propensity to garner the critical acclaim of the ‘indiest’ of indie sorts.
Now releasing this Crossing Towns EP with the legendary Shelflife Records and a Japanese blue-very label that has been in ridiculously good form of late, Lost Tapes seem set to cement their reputation as one of the ‘coolest’ (forgive the limited vocabulary of an old man!) acts around.
Presenting their inimitable burnished, jangled beauty in two interconnected nuances, this EP feels like the ultimate celebration of their signature aesthetic. As such, the title track and Crowns offer the most muted Lavender Blush-style mix of subtle gaze inflections and jangled lo-fi melodies that seem to snip away at the corners of melancholy to reveal a hope emanating from nothing more than genuine beauty.
Secrets and Amanda Grant (alternative version) move much closer to the dream-pop drizzled, soft, jangly indie-pop sounds that are reminiscent of the latest Meyverlin offerings and it’s The Royal Landscaping Society meets perfect under-production, slight sophisti-pop caresses.
A Lost Tapes release is always something to be treasured so grab yourself a 7″ vinyl version here.
