Album Review – Don’t Look Back by Hurry (2023) (Lame O Records)

Hurry400

On their sixth Don’t Look Back album since 2012 (their fourth in succession with the Lame O Records album), Philadelphia foursome Hurry confirm their credentials as the band most likely to finally wrestle the power-pop genre away from the middle-aged paisley shirt wearers.
With its omnipresent subtle jangle-pop riffs and shifts in tempo, this album has to be one of the power-pop genres’ ‘best ofs’ for 2023.
It’s finest moments benefit from the band ‘letting go’ and blasting out their power-pop energies. Here Didn’t Have To Try and The Punchline thread Matthew Sweet’s smooth prettiness through a fabric of modern power-pop that is so reminiscent of the recent 2nd Grade vibe (although, in all probability, Hurry has provided the influence between the two).
When the tempo reclines more solidly within mid-tempo, the absolute beauty of the album emerges and never really lets go. Here, Like I Loved You, No Patience, and Around My Heart visit the sultry stunning of Dropkick, Terje Terkellson and Teenage Fanclub, whereas the slacker energies of The Lemonheads augment the release in Parallel Hunting and Something More.
Always dedicated to the finest essences that power-pop has to offer, I cannot ever see a time where Hurry would need to deviate from their beautiful, tried and tested template.
