Album Review – Talk About Prolific? by Zenxith (Self released) (2024)

Zenxith

Prolificity is a much-debated subject. Some argue that releasing as much as possible of a good thing is always going to be a worthy cause, whereas others summate that consistent releases of same-act music can lead to the public becoming jaded with an artist. We all have different opinions on the subject, and I doubt very much that we will ever move even remotely close to a definitive answer.
Not that it matters a hoot to the prolific. They plainly have an itch to scratch in terms of releasing music that will never be abated by the mere opinion of others. Take, for instance, Newcastle-based Daniel McGee and his Zenxith solo recording project.
This superb Talk About Prolific album is not only his 13th album since October 2022, but the release also virtually coincides with the release of his double CD physical format release via Subjangle. Now, to some competing physical release products would be counter-intuitive, but this act and his ilk just have a need to ‘get it out there’.
Thankfully, Zenxith is always good enough to circumvent such issues and this album continues to drift through various musical nuances that emphasize his undoubted talent.
As such, the slow-burning lo-fi, Elliott Smith jangly dank of Halfway Dead, Let’s Build an Arcade, and the quaintly named She’s Bleeding Down My Throat morph into the tracks best represented by Bristol Station, Library Girl, The Streets of Your Mind, and The Happy Times that feel like an amalgamation of all the finest parts of The Boltons, Guided by Voices, and The Television Personalities.
However, the tracks that truly resonate with me are Marine Water Animals, Tuesday, This Obsession, and It Isn’t Here, which all move towards the subtle jangle-gaze of the early Glom and Ghost Mail aesthetic that heaves beautiful emotionality.
There will be another few albums out in the next few months…lets hope he manages to continue to revel in his prolificity !
