EP Review – Get It Twisted by Catwalk (2022) (Self released)

cwalk

On their third EP since 2016, Perth based quintet, Catwalk, continue to offer their irresistably cool take on slacker-pop addled Australiana.
Initially, the best of the album is heard in the the more laconic tracks. Here opener, Broken Catch, delivers its slacker-pop vibe, filling the cracks between the genre’s lethargy with a downplayed sense of Triple J dulcet and twang laden riffs. Similarly, Get It Twisted’s standout of Wallace, uses chime as it’s musical cement.
The slacker vibe is completely usurped in Not Broken Enough and Timeless Animals. Here power-pop riffs are delivered completely without the sheen that most middle-aged, American acts do it with. This is the roughshod, Aussie version of the genre and immediately reminiscent of acts like Danny Mcdonald and The Valery Trails. It’s ‘lived in’ power-pop, perfectly devoid of any sense of formlaic cheesy.
Finally, the remaining two tracks of Rick Moranis and Cowboy continues with their ever present homage to Talking Heads, with quirky, agitated alt.pop being slathered in synth lines, that always make such tracks very much their own.
Catwalk always have much to offer, however this release is undeniably their best so far, from a band who are possible just a full length debut away from getting some proper critical attention.
